This screen of bamboo softens
the house and breaks up the side with no windows. |
 |
Here
a corner of the house has a shrub and groundcover bamboo
stepping down from the taller screening bamboo. These
lower
bamboos provide great accenting while not obscuring the
view from window, |

Black
bamboo is used to break up another plain wall of the
house. The color of the house makes a great backdrop
to the black canes of bamboo, giving a nice look as you
approach the front door. |

On this installation we are screening off
a restaurant patio from the parking area. First, we install
a barrier around the planting bed to keep the bamboo from
traveling under the pavers or into the gravel driveway.
|
 |
After the installation is completed, the bamboo
provides a pleasant visual barrier between the eating area
and the parking lot. The bamboo accomplishes this while maintaining
the feeling of openness, which could not be achieved by a
fence or other plants, such as arborvitae. |

Work for this job started at Little
Acre Farm, with the digging of large specimen bamboos weeks
before the installation. After they were dug, they were
cared for regularly until stabilized.
Upon arrival
at the job site in N. Y. City, we were faced with getting
these 25’ tall bamboo plants through a building
and then standing them up in a walled-in, open-air courtyard.
The bamboo were carefully laid down and walked through
the building until we reached the doorway leading to
the courtyard. At this point the bamboo were angled through
the doorway and stood up at the same time to fit inside
the courtyard |
 |
As
we stood these bamboos up and planted them, they started
to create an instant groove that transformed the area.
After the
bamboo was installed, we created a grid system made of
bamboo poles to stabilize the plants until they rooted |
 |
The top half
of these bamboos could be enjoyed from a small sitting
area on the rooftop. The bamboos created a small oasis
that broke up the monotony of the tall cement buildings
surrounding it. |

The
bamboo acts as a buffer between neighbors and the customer's
deck in
the backyard. |

This ledge planting
was a challenge. All of the bamboo, as well as the topsoil
needed to be hoisted up with a pulley. A brace was placed
to support the bamboo until it roots. |

Once this screen
fills out, the building will not be visible behind it. |
