Bamboo has been known and admired throughout most parts of the world for centuries. The plant is one of the most useful for building materials, tools, furniture, and even food.
Bamboo is a thing of beauty with its lush foliage and graceful habit. It is also a symbol of strength, resilience, and serenity in many Asian cultures. The United States has only recently recognized this incredible plant. It is quickly becoming one of most popular plants on the market. It has been utilized as screening, accenting, specimen planting, hedges, groundcover, erosion control and even as a household plant.

SNOW COVERED GROVE

Screening

Bamboo serves as an excellent screening plant. It is evergreen, providing year-round coverage. One of the fastest growing plants, bamboo fills in and grows into a dense screen. This screen may reach substantial height quickly, while only a few feet in width. Unlike pine, spruce, and other commonly used evergreens that become enormous over time, bamboo maintains its narrow profile and is ideal for smaller yards.

EXCELLENT PRIVACY SCREENING

Accenting

Bamboo can be used to complement other plants and features of a landscape. With its graceful habit, it blends well and works great around rocks and water.

Specimen

Bamboo can also be used as a specimen plant by itself. There are clumping bamboos with beautiful, delicate weeping foliage such as Fargesia nitida and Fargesia murielae. These bamboo create a fountain or mound of foliage. There are also many taller running bamboos that look great by themselves. There is a wide selection of colors and characteristics to choose from.

Hedge & Topiary

Some of the smaller bamboos make excellent hedges that can be kept waist high by shearing. Shibatea kumasaca is a bamboo suited for this use.
Bamboo even lends itself to topiary, creating interesting shapes and designs.

Groundcover

Quickly spreading and remaining low growing, these "groundcover" bamboos come in many colors. They provide an alternative choice to the use of ivy and pachysandra. Most of these bamboos benefit from trimming in early spring before they flush new growth. They are semi-evergreen and may seem tattered by the end of winter, but will produce new foliage in spring.

Erosion Control

Spreading bamboos creates a dense network of underground roots. This assists in solidifying loose soil protecting it from washouts, especially on slopes.

Container Plant

Although many of the tropical and sub-tropical bamboos work as house plants, there are cold hardy bamboos. Arrow Bamboo, for example, makes an excellent house plant. Most bamboos do well in outdoor pots, but must still be protected in winter. The pot needs to be protected because the roots are exposed to the winter cold. Protecting the pot may involve digging it 3/4 into the ground or wrapping the pot with an insulator. You may also bring the container inside for the winter months if possible.
